Dr. John Gentles

Dr. Gentles graduated in 1984 from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. During his university career he was recognized for his leadership in student affairs, including terms as President of the Optometric Student Society. Dr. Gentles continued to be actively involved in professional affairs, by serving for many years on the board, executive and as President of the BC Association of Optometrists (2001 2003). It was during these many years that optometrists sought to be recognized and eventually authorized to prescribe pharmaceutical agents for patients both nationally and within BC. Following his years of service, he was honored as a recipient of the President’s Award by what is now BC Doctors of Optometry.

Upon graduation, Dr. Gentles returned to his hometown of Fort St John to provide full scope optometric services to northeastern BC for over forty years. With partners, he operated practices in Fort St John, Dawson Creek and For Nelson and provided services to several remote First Nations communities. Dr. Gentles is a past President of the Fort St John Rotary Club and was member of the Board of Directors for Northern Health.

A father to two children and now also grandchildren, he has no desire to fully retire or stop serving patients. He looks forward to putting his lifetime of optometric experience to use with Armstrong Optometry.

When not at work, he enjoys skiing & snowboarding, sailing & kayaking, cooking, gardening, woodworking, piano, and travel.
