Diabetes & Your Eyes: Protect Your Vision

If you have diabetes, you probably know how important it is to take care of your health. But it’s just as important to look after your eyes. Diabetes can cause diabetic eye disease, a group of conditions that can damage your vision over time. The good news is that most vision loss from diabetes can be prevented with early care and regular eye exams.

How diabetes affects your eyes

High blood sugar can damage the tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen to the retina — the part of your eye that helps you see. When these vessels leak or swell, it can cause blurry vision or, in serious cases, permanent vision loss. This is called diabetic retinopathy.

Sometimes, fluid builds up in the center of the retina, leading to diabetic macular edema, which makes it harder to see fine details. These changes often happen slowly, which is why it’s important to have your eyes checked regularly.

What to watch for

In the early stages, diabetic eye disease doesn’t usually cause any symptoms. As it progresses, you might notice: Blurry or fluctuating vision, dark spots or floaters, trouble seeing at night If you notice any of these changes, see your eye doctor as soon as possible.

Prevention is the best protection

The best way to protect your eyes is simple: get a comprehensive eye exam every year. Your optometrist can spot early signs of damage before you notice any changes. Keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol at healthy levels is also vital to help further reduce your risk. Try to eat a balanced diet, stay active, and avoid smoking – these small steps make a big difference for both your eyes and your overall health.

Treatment can help

If diabetic eye disease is found early, treatments such as laser therapy, injections, or surgery can often slow or stop further vision loss. Many people who get treatment early can maintain good vision for years.

Take care of your sight

Diabetes doesn’t have to mean losing your sight. With good daily management and regular eye care, you can keep your vision strong for years to come. If you have diabetes, make eye exams a part of your routine – your eyes will thank you.
